Fallen Princesses

These amazing photos are from Dina Goldstein and JPG Magazine. The insights are eye opening but this is sooo disturbing.Specially now that my daughter is starting to like stories and fairytales.
 Cinderella
"These works place Fairy Tale characters in modern day scenarios. In all of the images the Princess is placed in an environment that articulates her conflict. The '...happily ever after' is replaced with a realistic outcome and addresses current issues."

  Snowhite with four kids??
Rapunzel... suffering from some kind of illness
Not so little Red Riding Hood
"I explored the original brothers Grimm's stories and found that they have very dark and sometimes gruesome aspects, many of which were changed by Disney. I began to imagine Disney's perfect Princesses juxtaposed with real issues that were affecting women around me, such as illness, addiction and self-image issues."
 Sleeping Beauty.

Princess Jasmine at war
Belle wants to remain "beauty"
"The project was inspired by my observation of three-year-old girls, who were developing an interest in Disney's Fairy tales. As a new mother I have been able to get a close up look at the phenomenon of young girls fascinated with Princesses and their desire to dress up like them. The Disney versions almost always have sad beginning, with an overbearing female villain, and the end is predictably a happy one. The Prince usually saves the day and makes the victimized young beauty into a Princess."

Love your blog! Just stumbled upon it from comments on Dinner at Christina's.

The info you posted recently regarding the princesses etc., is really eye opening. I have been questioning that stuff for awhile now, even though my daughter is still quite young (16months).

Take care! :)

Sa bagay...

But I guess, it's the mother in us who wants to let our little girls live in a sweet world for as long as they want to. You know, these are good memories they could live by when they get to face the "witches" of the real world.

Children are really smart nowadays so they'll figure things out for sure. Meanwhile, I'll just enjoy those princess smiles that Disney princesses bring to my daughter. :)
